আশঙ্কাজনক ভাবে রাজধানী ঢাকার জলাভূমি ও জলাধারের সংখ্যা কমে যাচ্ছে। এভাবে চলতে থাকলে ২০৩৬ সালের মধ্যে রাজধানীতে আর জলাভূমি পাওয়া যাবে না বলে আশঙ্কা প্রকাশ করেছেন নগর পরিকল্পনাবিদ ও পরিবেশ বিশেষজ্ঞগণ।

 দুবাই, ১ জুন: বিশ্ব তামাক মুক্ত দিবস উপলক্ষে পুরো দেশে ২৪ ঘণ্টা সিগারেট বিক্রি নিষিদ্ধ করেছিলো দুবাই।

 এসময় দেশটির প্রায় ৩০০ তামাকের দোকান, মার্কেট ও পেট্রল পাম্পগুলোতে সারাদিনের জন্য সিগারেট বিক্রি বন্ধ করে দেয়া হয়েছিলো।

The World Conference on Tobacco or Health (WCTOH) is the premier, international conference on tobacco control. It is held once every 3 years, and attracts thousands of academics, health professionals, non-government organisations and public officials from more than 100 countries.

 A new study published in Tobacco Control finds that restaurants have not suffered economically as a result of Mexico City’s 100% smoke-free law. Findings are based on a monthly survey of businesses from January 2005 to April 2009 and comparison with states similar to Mexico City that do not have comprehensive smoke-free laws.  

Study Findings

·         Restaurants’ revenues increased 25%.

·         Total wages paid to restaurant workers increased 28%.

·         Employment in the restaurant sector rose 16%.

Key Message

·         Smoke-free laws do not harm business at restaurants.

দিন দিন মানুষের মাঝে রোগ বাড়ছে। প্রতিটি ব্যক্তি, পরিবার রোগ ও রোগের চিকিৎসার জন্য নিরন্তন লড়ছে। রোগের চিকিৎসা করতে গিয়ে সর্বশান্ত হচ্ছে অনেকেই। ক্রমাবর্ধমান রোগের জন্য জনসাধারণকে মানসম্মত চিকিৎসা সেবা প্রদান রাষ্ট্র ও সরকারের জন্য একটি বড় চ্যালেঞ্জ হয়ে দাড়িয়েছে। রোগ সৃষ্টির অনেকগুলো কারণের মাঝে একটি বড় কারণ হচ্ছে পরিবেশ দূষণ। পরিবেশ দূষণ রোগ বৃদ্ধির প্রক্রিয়া তরান্বিত করছে জেনেও ব্যক্তি হিসেবে পরিবেশ দূষণ রোধে আমরা সক্রিয় নই। শুধুমাত্র সরকার বা প্রশাসনের উপর দায় চাপিয়ে দিয়ে নিজেদের পরিবেশ দূষণজনিত রোগ হতে আমরা নিজেদের মুক্ত রাখতে পারবো না।

The Southeast Asia Tobacco Control Alliance (SEATCA) recently released the report, Implementing Pictorial Health Warnings in Malaysia: Challenges and Lessons Learned, which highlights Malaysia’s experience with implementing pictorial warning labels on tobacco packs despite huge tobacco industry resistance.

Iran’s government recently destroyed 180 million illegal cigarettes, worth $560,000, south of Tehran in an effort to combat tobacco smuggling.

Since Iran implemented health warning labels on cigarette packages in early 2009 and increased tobacco taxes, the country has experienced an unprecedented influx of smuggled tobacco products.
