WBB's Activities on Environment

WBB conducts research and works to support the Government ban on polythene bag use.

To learn more about the problem of noise pollution in Dhaka and present possible solutions, WBB recently conducted a survey of 2,500 people and published a report in English and Bengali with information about the extent and severity of the problem, and recommendations for reducing it.  A press conference to release the report was broadcast on the news of three TV stations, and the report was discussed in over 20 newspapers.  WBB has also conducted two radio programs that address the issue of noise pollution.

WBB played a key role in the formation of the Committee Against Noise Pollution, which has organized a day-long workshop on noise pollution at ICDDR,B attended by various NGOs, and a rally.

WBB plays a leading role in the Committee Against Polythene Bags, working together to organize rallies and protests against the use of polythene bags and in favor of the government decision to ban their use (see News).

Polythene Bag Ban: What is the situation after one year? WBB is conducted a survey throughout Bangladesh in winter 2003 to learn what the situation regarding polythene bags was one year following the ban on their use. The survey includes shopkeepers and customers, as well as observation at markets. The study released on June 2003. see research report

WBB has conducted a survey among shopkeepers and customers at major markets throughout Dhaka, as well as a focus group, to understand people's perspectives on the polythene bag ban, and to determine messages for mass media campaigns.

WBB staff regularly participate in and present at conferences on the environment held in Bangladesh.  At  the 1st National Conference on Environment and Health, WBB presented about
tobacco's effect on the environment.  WBB attended the 1st and 2nd International Conferences on the Bangladesh Environment (ICBEN I and II).  At ICBEN II, WBB staff presented about noise pollution and the situation of tobacco farmers in Bangladesh, and WBB had a stall to distribute our reports and share information on urban environmental problems with conference participants.
