Health Promotion Foundation for Preventing Diseases

Along with unplanned urbanization and population growth; unhealthy lifestyle, food habit, drug addiction, smoking, usage of tobacco, environmental degradation are the reasons of massive spread of non communicable diseases like heart attack, stroke, cancer, diabetes etc. The focus of National Health Policy 2011 is prevention of diseases. Even then health sector of Bangladesh is based on treatment. As a result diseases are increasing among people. 23 countries in the world including Nepal, Thailand, Philippine, Switzerland, Africa, Brunei, Canada, Finland, Singapore, and Malaysia have established “Health Promotion Foundation” and in many other countries the procedure is continuing. In financial year 2014-15, Bangladesh government has imposed 1% surcharge upon tobacco. A “Health Promotion Foundation” is needed indeed to utilize the money to take decision, monitoring and evaluation for preventing diseases. Speakers from 20 health and environmentalist organization said such on 6th May, 2015 at a demonstration demanding “Health Promotion Foundation utilizing the money received from surcharge on tobacco” in front of National Press Club.

Former regional consultant of World Health Organization (WHO) and advisor on health of Poribesh Bachao Andolon (POBA) Dr. Mozharul Haq, technical consultant of The Union (an international organization for the development of public health) Syed Mahbubul Alam, joint secretary of Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA) Mihir Bishwas, program secreatary of Bangladesh Anti-Tobacco Association Rafikul Islam Milon, secretary of Poribesh Bachao Andolon (POBA) Monjur Hasan Dilu, project coordinator of ACLAB Maksud Ullah etc were the speakers of the demonstration. Director (Admin) of Work for A Better Bangladesh Trust Gaous Pearee Mukti chaired the demonstration and National Advocacy Officer of Work for A Better Bangladesh Trust Maruf Hossain moderated it.

Chief executive Enam Ahmed from Jalalabad Foundation, organizer of Madhobika Abdul Razzak, chief executive Ali Hazari of United People’s Trust, researcher Md. Mohiuddin from Dhaka International University Tobacco Control Research Cell, coordinator Atiq Morshed of Poribesh Bachao Andolon (POBA) , member of B-scan Kamruzzaman, tobacco control officer of Manobik Sumon Sheikh, member of Pratyasha Anti drug club Akib Dipu etc were also present in the demonstration.
