Tobacco companies interference need to resist for the sake of public health

Cunning tobacco companies are taking various deceptive tactics to obstruct the development of activities related to public health and tobacco control adopted by the government. Tobacco companies have encouraged corruption in different countries. Also in Bangladesh, British American Tobacco (BAT) Company has adopted corrupt measures. Such mischievous moves need to be strictly prevented. According to article 5.3 of international agreement on tobacco control ‘Framework convention on Tobacco control (FCTC)’, policy (Code of Conduct) needs to be taken in all government institutions.

On 30 November 2016, experts opined this in a view exchange meeting held at Work for a Better Bangladesh (WBB) Trust meeting room. Aminul Islam Sujon, Executive editor of ‘Swamoswar’- quarterly newsletter of Bangladesh Anti-Tobacco Alliance (BATA) outlined the necessity of potential policies according to article 5.3. Helal Ahmed, Secretary General of Prottasha Anti-Drug Club; Tarikul Islam, Executive Director of ACLAB; Aminul Islam Bokul, Executive Director of AID Foundation; Sayeeda Akter, Coordinator of Tamak Birodhi Nari Jot (TABINAJ); Gaous Pearee, Director of WBB Trust; Syeda Anonna Rahman, Program Manager of WBB Trust discussed in the meeting giving views and suggestions highlighting what should be in the policy.

Aminul Islam Sujon said, ‘as government has signed and ratified international tobacco control agreement and passed act and rules in the light of that, so it is mandatory for us to accomplish FCTC and its articles. Article 5.3 of FCTC is said as safeguard of tobacco control. All government institutions will have to take policy in the light of the directives of the World Health Organization to implement this Article.’

‘What sort of relationship will be of government and government institutions with the company, how the government will prevent violation of law by tobacco company and company's ‘corporate social responsibility’ and other social-cultural program is said in the article. There also discouraged government officials participation in the tobacco companies program and restrictions have been imposed on such affairs. Moreover, it also mentioned to ensure transparency and accountability in the necessary cases,’ he added.
