Car free Day to Celebrate in Government and non-Government Joint Venture

In the 70s due to oil crisis, Europe started to celebrate Car free day. From 2000 the day is being widely celebrated to make the cities more livable and to reduce pollution, health hazards and congestion. At present around 4000 cities celebrate Car free Day on 22nd September. Moreover Bogota, Jakarta and some other cities celebrate Car free week. Bangladesh is celebrating Car free Day from 2006 in a non-governmental level. One of the major reasons is to solve the congestion problem by reducing the numbers of cars.

Car free Day is going to be celebrated in Government and non-Government Joint Venture on 2016. On 9 August 2016, 11 AM, at DTCA conference room of Nagar Bhaban (Dhaka South City Corporation) a preparation meeting took place and the decision was made there. And three roads were proposed to celebrate the day and roads were Manik Mia Avenue or Hatijhil or Shahbagh. It was also decided that the selected road will be closed for 2 hours and various games, cultural event and discussion meeting will be organized. One committee was formed to celebrate the day and Mr Kaykobad, Executive Director, DTCA was selected the convener.             

The meeting was presided by Mr Kaykobad, Executive Director, DTCA and Executive Engineer, Nur-e-Alam, Roads and Highways Department was the keynote speaker. Besides Maruf Hossain, Program Manager, Work for a Better Bangladesh Trust; Abu Naser Khan, Chairman, Save the Environment Movement; Dr Akter Mahmud, General Secretary, Bangladesh Institue of Planners (B.I.P); Mahidul Haq Khan, Executive Member, Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA); Nikhil Chandra Bhadra, Senior Reporter, Kaler Kantho; Nasiruddin Tarafdar, Transport Engineer, DTCA; Shoma Hapang, ADC, Traffic South; Aminul Islam, DTCA; Engineer Abdus Sobhan, Executive General Secretary, Save the Environment Movement and Mir Shafi, Director, Institute of Wellbeing were the speakers.
