Students demand to ensure Active and Safe Route to School

Congestion of Dhaka city takes the most chaotic form during school time. One of the major reasons is to use one car per student. Walk to school will help to reduce the congestion. It will also be helpful to reduce pollution and transport cost. So it is important to ensure same standard school in all communities and students should be admitted to the community schools only. Government has declared 40% quota for the community children. The declaration should be implemented as soon as possible because this will encourage children to walk the little distance. Besides it is important to ensure safe and comfortable walking condition. Sweet Bird School and Work for a Better Bangladesh Trust jointly organized an orientation program on Active and Safe Route to School. On 21st July 2016, around 300 students took part in the orientation. It was found out that 98% students walk to school.

Atiqur Rahman, Project Officer, Work for a Better Bangladesh Trust, discussed about necessity of walking,, problems and solutions regarding walking. He said, walking is beneficiary for health, environment and economic perspective. Students should be careful while walking in the street for safety.

The program was inaugurated by Jesmin Nahar, Headmistress, Sweet Bird School. Besides, Sharmin Akter, Project Officer and Naima Akter, Assistant Advocacy Officer, Work for a Better Bangladesh Trust were present in the program.
