Two streets are primarily selected to go Car free

The increased use of private car has increased congestion, pollution and number of injury. Moreover cars from other community cause more problems for the community people. If outside cars are banned in the community then it can be changed into a good place of socialization, games. In one word a street can turn into a lively place. Through a research, 3 no Road of Mohammadpur Housing Society in 33 no ward and Rajia Sultana Road in ward no 31, have been primarily chosen to make car free. Proposal will be submitted to Honorable Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation Annisul Haque to finalize the decision of making these streets car free. The study was conducted by students of Urban and Regional Planning, BUET under the supervision of Work for a Better Bangladesh Trust. On 5 March 2017, Dhaka North City Corporation, Urban and Regional Planning, BUET and Work for a Better Bangladesh trust jointly organized a view exchange meeting on ‘Control Private Cars to ensure Pedestrian-friendly Environment’ at 31 no ward councilor office, Mohammadpur Town Hall. In the view exchange meeting the findings of the reseacrh was shared.

Speakers said that, only 7% trips are conducted by car in Dhaka city but they occupy 70% of the road. An integrated public transport system should be introduced with walking, cycling and rickshaw, so that dependency upon car can be reduced. With this motto Car free Day 2016 was observed with government and non-government collaboration. Honorable Minister of Road Transport and Bridges and Honorable Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation both committed to take step in this regard. Mayor of DNCC said that he will make at least one road car free in his area. The research has been done as a continuation of the work.

The students from BUET, who done the research said that, , 3 no Road of Mohammadpur Housing Society is 400 meter wide and Razia Sultana Road is 530 meter wide. Both are residential area. Community people have around 80 cars. These cars can be marked by stickers. And other cars can be restricted. In both streets there are alternative route for cars. If these streets are car free, then it can be made a place for socialization for community children.  Besides pollution will be lessen there. At the beginning, there will be some problems but when people will find out the benefits of car free streets, they will welcome it. But community people should take initiative in this regard because it is not possible for the city corporation to take care of the program in all community.
