Demand of Controlling Private Cars to Ensure Livable City

Only 7% trips are conducted in Dhaka by private cars but they occupy 70% of the roads. If an integrated transportation system is ensured with walking, cycling, rickshaw and public bus then it will be easier to reduce dependency upon cars. Private cars create obstacle for pedestrians. To ensure a livable city for all including person with disability, children and senior citizens number of private cars should be controlled. On 20th May 2017 Institute of Wellbeing, Camp Cool and Work for a Better Bangladesh Trust expressed the above view in a human chain organized at Dhanmondi 27.

Speakers said that, increased number of private cars cause congestion. Congestion cause waste of time, fuel and pollutes our environment. More and more cars are getting registered every day. As a result the numbers of road accidents are also increasing. Because of increased number of private cars persons with disability are losing accessibility. We should focus more on public transport in our transport plan instead of cars.

The human chain was moderated by Mandy Indrani Mukhuti, Program Coordinator, Institute of Wellbeing and speakers of the program wee Shanjida Akhter, Assistant Project Officer, Work for a Better Bangladesh Trust and ANM Masum Billah Bhuiyan, Institute of Wellbeing.
