Students Demand to Ensure Safe Walking Environment

Now-a-days we have less opportunity for physical activity so; children are suffering from obesity, type 2 diabetes, insomnia and other diseases.  Lack of enough open space is one of the major reasons behind this. Children will get opportunity of physical activity by walking to school. Traffic congestion in Dhaka becomes the worst during school time. Congestion problem can be reduced by promoting walking. Because of poor walking condition people is discouraged to walk. Many children walk to school in Dhaka. It is important to develop the walking environment. On 15th March 2018 Aroni School in Lalmatia and Work for a Better Bangladesh Trust jointly organized an orientation program on Active and Safe Route to School. After the orientation a human chain was organized on demand of safe walking environment.

About 110 students of Aroni School participated in the orientation program. Half of the students informed they walk to school. They face various difficulties while walking, such as- reckless driving, excessive honking, water logging, congestion and many others. They said it is important to develop the condition.

Facilitator of the orientation program was Project Officer of Work for a Better Bangladesh Trust, MD Atikur Rahman. He said, it is essential to do at least 1 hour of physical activity every day. If the walking environment develops, then people will be encouraged to walk and travel demand, congestion, fuel consumption and pollution will reduce.

In the human chain, Project Manager of Work for a Better Bangladesh Trust said, the number of children being driven to school has increased. It is important to ensure same standard school in all community.  

Principal of Aroni School, Nina Bhuiyan said that, awareness among guardian and children should be increased in walk to school issue. It is important to ensure coordination among City Corporations, Ministry of Education and other relevant bodies.

Director of Work for a Better Bangladesh Trust Gaous Pearee said, people have a false of that, car determines their status, so they use cars for a short trip. If the walking environment is developed, the dependence upon cars and rickshaws will decrease.

Also, Deputy Program Manager of Work for a Better Bangladesh Trust Naznin Kabir, Senior Project Officer Ziaur Rahman and teachers and students of Aroni School participated in the human chain.
