Tobacco control policies have to be free from TI interference Need separate budget at local level for tobacco control

To ensure sustainable tobacco control, separate budget allocation is required for anti-tobacco programs at City corporations, Municipalities, Union parishad, Upazila and district councils. As well as the implementation of article 5.3 is need to protect tobacco control laws and policies from TI interference. In a seminar jointly organized by WBB Trust, Bangladesh Anti Tobacco Alliance, Shimantik and The Union held at Sylhet divisional commissioner's office on 18 May 2016, speakers expressed this.

Divisional Commissioner of Sylhet Md. Jamal Uddin Ahmed, Director of Health Dr. Gouro Moni Sinha, Additional DC Md. Motiur Rahman, Additional DM Syed Md. Aminur Rahman, Additional Police Super (South Sylhet) Nurul Islam, Deputy Civil Surgeon Dr. Abul Kalam Azad, and Technical Advisor of The Union Syed Mahbubul Alam were present in the seminar. WBB Trust's Director Gaouse Pearee was presided over the seminar where keynote presentation was given by Sharmin Akter, Project Officer, WBB Trust.

Speakers said 'Tobacco control is an important movement to protect public health. Huge progress has been made by this movement. But tobacco companies are making various obstacles to implement tobacco control law. Transparency and accountability have to be ensured according to article 5.3 to prevent laws and policies from tobacco companies' influence. Besides this, in Bangladesh currently more people are dying in non-communicable diseases, one of the reasons of which is tobacco. About 6.4 million people become poor for bearing treatment cost. So priority should give on prevention system. '

They also said 'now the number youth is higher in Bangladesh, so priority should give on youth's health to ensure a healthy nation in future. Sale of tobacco products near educational institutions must be stopped. '
