World Cities Day 2023 Increase investment to ensure a pedestrian and bicycle-friendly environment

60 % of people in Dhaka city commute on foot, while only 5-7% of people in the city own private cars. Despite that, various projects revolved on private cars are being adopted, and infrastructure is being built in the urban transport plan. There is no alternative to ensuring a pedestrian and cycle-friendly environment to build a sustainable and inclusive city and meet the commuting needs of most people. Therefore, to raise awareness at the policy-making level to take initiatives to increase investment, the theme of the World Cities Day in 2023 is "Financing sustainable urban future for all".

Today 31 October 2023, at 11.00 am on the occasion of celebration of World Cities Day 2023 Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA), Poribesh Bachao Andolon (PABA), Institute for Planning and Development (IPD), Pratyasha Anti-Drug Club, Green Voice, Rayerbazar High School, Dhaka Ideal Cadet School, Ali Hossain Girls School, Dhanmondi Kachikantha High School, Chayatal Bangladesh, Institute of Wellbeing Bangladesh, and Work for a Better Bangladesh Trust jointly organized a demonstration titled “Pedestrian and Cycle Friendly Planning: Sustainable Solutions in Urban Transport System” and speakers opined such in the event.

This event has been moderated by Assistant Project Officer Md. Mithun and was presided over by Director of Work for a Better Bangladesh Trust Gaous Pearee. Naima Akter, project manager of the organization, MA Mannan Monir, founder of Dhaka Ideal Cadet School, HM Nurul Islam, headmaster of Dhanmondi Kachikantha High School, Assistant teacher Md Kausarof Rayerbazar High School, Mr Newton, assistant teacher of Ali Hossain Girls School, Md Eamon, volunteer of Chayatal Bangladesh spoke at this event.

Representatives of various organizations, including the officials of the Institute of Wellbeing Bangladesh and Work for a Better Bangladesh Trust, were also present at the event.
