A call to create a safe walking environment to reduce non-communicable diseases

The risk of non-communicable diseases among children and adolescents is gradually increasing due to the lack of adequate opportunities for physical activity. Walking to school can play a positive role in children's physical and mental health. People of all ages and abilities will benefit if they are able to walk safely. Ensuring a safe walking environment can help building an inclusive city.

Today 30th, November 2023, at 10.00 am in the auditorium of Bengali Medium High School, Dhaka Ideal Cadet School, HealthBridge Foundation of Canada and Work for a Better Bangladesh Trust organized a workshop on 'Walk to School to control non-communicable diseases'. The speakers expressed this opinion in the ceremony.

Narayan Chandra Das, head master of Bengali Medium High School presided over the event and Proma Saha, project officer of Work for a Better Bangladesh Trust, presented the keynote speech. MA Mannan Monir, the founder of Dhaka Ideal Cadet School, Ziaur Rahman, senior project manager of Work for a Better Bangladesh Trust, Director of Work for a Better Bangladesh Trust Gaous Pearee spoke at the event.

In the workshop, students were divided into groups and presented their various problems and solutions for walking to school. Walking problems include construction materials on the road, motorbikes movement and illegal parking on footpaths, littering, excess of private vehicles, unsafe road crossing, etc.

Assistant teachers of Bengali Medium High School Shamima Sultana, Zakir Hossain, Assistant Project Officer of Work for a Better Bangladesh Trust Badhan Ghosh and students of Bengali Medium High School were also present at this event.
