Taking Initiatives is Necessary to Control Usage of Private Cars

To reduce congestion usage of private cars will be reduced and public transportation system will be improved. In an event to celebrate World Carfree Day, Chief Guest Honorable Minister Mr Obaidul Qader said that, there is a thought to restrict buying more than one car per family in the new Road Transport Act. Special Guest Mr Annisul Haque, Honorable Mayor, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) said that, In Banani one street will be pedestrianised. It was informed from the discussion that initiatives are being taken to reduce the number of private cars and to facilitate public bus and walking.

World Carfree Day is being celebrated in Bangladesh since 2006. In 2016 for the first time Bangladesh Government has taken initiative to celebrate the day. Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA), Dhaka South and North City Corporation, Roads and Highways Department and other government and non-government organization have jointly celebrated the day. On 22nd September 2016, 44 organizations have celebrated the day closing vehicles in the street from 10am to 1pm. Various events like discussion, cycle rally, cultural program, kite flying etc were organized. The event was inaugurated by National Anthem, followed by flying pigeon and balloon.

The discussion part were presided over Jakir Hossain Majumder, acting Executive Director, Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA) and moderated by Maruf Hossain, Program Manager, Work for a Better Bangladesh Trust. Other presented in the discussion part were AKM Mainuddin, Convener, World Carfree Day Celebration Committee and Deputy Commissioner, West Zone, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). 800 people including leaders of different organizations and students were present in the event.
