Protection of policies enacted for public interest and resist the effects of tobacco companies is necessary

Taking proper steps to implement Article 5.3.of international tobacco control treaty FCTC is necessary to keep the law and policies free from tobacco companies influence. Speakers expressed this in a seminar titled “Necessity of implementation of FCTC article 5.3 in tobacco control” held at Chittagong divisional commissioner’s office on 6 February 2017. WBB Trust, Bangladesh Anti-Tobacco Alliance and The Union jointly organized the seminar.

Chittagong Divisional Commissioner Ruhul Amin addressed the discussion as chief guest while Additional Divisional Commissioner Syeda Sarowar Jahan was in the chair. Among others, Divisional Deputy Director (Local Govt.) Md. Mizanur Rahman, Deputy Director of agriculture extention department Md. Aminul Huq Chowdhury, Assistant Director (Admin) of Director Health’s Office Dr. Mohammad Abdur Rahim, ADC General of Chittagong Mashukur Rahman, Deputy Police Inspector Md. Akter Hossain, Director of WBB Trust Gaous Pearee, and Team Leader of YPSA Nasim Banu Shamoly spoke in the seminar.

Speakers said, ‘to prevent and control tobacco companies’ trick and ill attempt there need to increase awareness and step up the relations with Tobacco Control Program. Despite of taking measures tobacco control by the government we are is we lag behind than other countries due to fraudulent activity multinational tobacco companies. To accelerate the overall development of the country government should be more stringent in tobacco control.
