3rd Divisional Workshop on Non-communicable Diseases (NCD) in Barisal

Attack of Non-communicable Diseases (NCD) is increasing for using soft drinks, energy drinks, packed juice, chips, fast food, smoking and tobacco products. Strict actions are required to control junk food and fast food. Speakers made above comments in the inaugural ceremony of Barisal Divisional Workshop. WBB Trust, Save the Coastal People (SCOPE), YES Bangladesh, and Socio-Economic Resource Center (SERC) jointly organized the workshop Barisal on september 20, 2012. Maruf Rahman, National Advocacy Officer of WBB Trust, Ishak Ali Mizan, Executive Director of YES Bangladesh, Md. Shah Alam, Executive Director of SERC and Azad Mollik, Executive Director of Multi Task addressed in the program. The program was convened by Adut Rahman Imon, Network Officer of WBB Trust.

In the day long workshop, Aminul Islam Sujon, Project Coordinator of WBB Trust presented key note on NCD, its causes, preventive measures and plan of action to change the adverse food habit of people. Sujon said, food habit is responsible for such diseases. The children specially eat chips, soft drinks, energy drinks and packed juice instead of fresh fruits and vegetables. As a result, they are being attacked by obesity and Type-2 diabetics. Sports facilities should be improved to save children from such diseases. In addition, they should be inspired to eat fresh fruits and vegetables.

National Advocacy Officer of WBB Trust Maruf Rahman presented note on “Importance of walking and cycling and action plan on creating walking and cycling friendly environment”. He said people are healthy when they walk. In addition, short distance should be walked. Cycling can also prevent NCDs. A regular 30 minutes cycling can reduce cancer, heart diseases and diabetics at a great extant. So, local level people should be encouraged for walking and cycling and a friendly environment should be created for this. He added.
