Demand graphic health warning on tobacco products packets

A group of anti tobacco activist along with hundred children and legendary film director Kazi Hayat and Chatku Ahmed demanded graphic health warning on all kind of tobacco products packets. On 24 February 2014 a public sensitization campaign were organized by the Pratysha Anti Drug’s Club and Work for a Better Bangladesh (WBB) Trust in front of Bangla Academy.
Film Director Kazi Hayat said that, smoking and using tobacco is the gateway of drug addiction. So, if we control drug addiction we should control tobacco strongly. Young generation is under threats as drug addiction is increasing. He mentioned Oishee, drug addicted girl who killed her parents. We don’t want such accident anymore.

Other Film Director Chatku Ahmed said, smoking or using tobacco is not only causes to death, it is also creates psychological, social, economical problems. That is why, tobacco should be discouraged by all way including graphic health warning on tobacco packets.

Secretary General of Pratysha, Helal Ahmed, said, a strong photograph/graphics is stronger thousand times than written message. So as our tobacco control law is amended, graphic health warning should in places sooner and it will reduce the interest of smoking or using tobacco.

With the reference of Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) information, Aminul Islam Sujon said, tobacco consumption is higher among poor and illiterates in Bangladesh. So there is no alternate to include graphic health warning on tobacco packets to create more awareness on health impact of tobacco to these illiterates.
