Push for foundation to promote public health initiatives

Health experts on Saturday said that in South Asia about 79 per cent people die due to non communicable diseases every year.
Referring to the major causes of the deaths, they said that there are so many reasons responsible for causing these diseases but fast urbanization is also one of the major causes.
They also demand the formation of Health Promotion Foundation to prevent non communicable diseases effectively.
The findings came at an exchanged meeting on "Importance of proposed health promotion foundation" jointly organized by Work for a Better Bangladesh Trust and Paribesh Bachao Andolon (POBA) at POBA office at 2nd may, 2015.
Engineer Md Abdus Sobhan, Executive General Secretary of POBA presided over the programme. Appreciating government's recent steps he said that government has imposed health tax on harmful tobacco products which will bring positive impact.
He also suggested government to form a Foundation like Palli Karma Sahayak Foundation so that collected money from the Health Tax could be spent for the benefit of the needy. 
Advocate Sayed Mahbubul Alam, Technical Consultant of The Union, presented a keynote paper on "Formation of health promotion foundation for prevention of diseases from the collected money of health tax."
In her paper she said that by spending less amount of money government can form a few acts and implement policies to control and prevent non communicable diseases. 
Referring to a few areas such as consuming tobacco and alcohol, including eating unhealthy fast food, Advocate Alam said that government should introduce some strict measures to bring sale of such unhealthy food under control.
Aminul Islam Sujon, Executive Editor of Swamaswar (Combined Voice), a quarterly newsletter of Bangladesh Tobacco Birodhi Jote said that to safeguard public health governments worldwide are known to be forming charity foundations.
He said that these foundations take different initiatives including conducting various researches from the collected money of Health Tax and in this way it contributes in the state's public health development sector.
 Manzur Hassan-member of POBA executive committee, Kazi Enayet Hossain-Executive Director of Save the Coastal People, Sayeda Annona Rahman-National Advocacy Officer of WBB Trust and Naznin Kabir-Senior Project officer also spoke at the programme.
